Overweight and obese people can face malicious treatment from people with no understanding of their situation. They may have trouble getting jobs and promotions because of their appearances—especially women. In an article by Maggie Mertens, Professor Rebecca Puhl explains that women experience weight discrimination at work at much lower levels of obesity than men do. Furthermore, she said, 'Some research in the U.S. has found that among women, weight discrimination is comparable to rates of racial discrimination'"(Lowery 49).
