Read Aloud Do's

Reading Aloud to Preschoolers

  • Choosing a book that isn't too long and doesn't have too many words on a page(10 min max)  Patterned or predictable books are good to read aloud to preschool students.
  • Get students ready to read and settled in -  you might consider doing a finger play with students or sing a familiar song that students have recently learned
  • Think aloud- as you read you may want to tell students what you are thinking as you are reading.
  • Reading non-fiction as well as fiction
  • Choose a book that you enjoy
  • Practice reading the book aloud before reading the story to students- Don't read too fast
  • Bring in item(s) to spark interest in the story or to help build background knowledge if the story is about something students may not be familiar with.
